On Sunday 31st May, East Keswick Seconds played Garforth Parish Church in the Betty Chadderton Rose Bowl quarter final. Under clear blue skies East Keswick lost the toss and were put in to bat on a wicket offering some life to the bowlers early on.
James Cosgrove and Andrew Hirst got Keswick off to a good start reaching 48 before the loss of the first wicket. Zaheer Ahmed then made a fluent 36 before being bowled, leaving Keswick on 100-2. After that the usual Keswick collapse ensued as wickets tumbled leaving the team 112-5 with 12 overs remaining.
However a solid partnership between Mohammed Ashfaq (51*) and Gareth Meredith (12) took Keswick up to the 200 mark, with Ashfaq bringing up his 50 with a six over mid-wicket. This left Keswick on a respectable 204-9 after their 40 overs.
In reply Garforth PC got off to a steady start, but one that was leaving them behind an increasing run rate. Man of the match Ashfaq (3 for 47) struck when removing the two opening batsmen, and with the next four players only making 6 runs between thanks to some good bowling by James Cosgrove (3 for 16), Garforth PC found themselves requiring a near impossible 10 runs an over.
Only some good late batting took them to 167-9, leaving them 38 runs short of the total and putting Keswick through to the Semi-Finals.
