Update - Players & Nets
A quick update regarding a couple of issues:
At the previous AGM it was agreed that unless the club had enough players to more than make up 2 teams that we would only enter one for the 2011 season. There was also some uncertainty regarding Khalid's intentions as he didn't attend the first meeting and had been ill when the second one took place. Since then Khalid has been in touch expressing his desire to play again next season and hopefully bring back the 8 or so players who were committed to playing for the club.
I've also been in the process of trying to attract some new players, and so far four people are due to attend the net practices (see below) starting in January. There is also the possibility of having some junior players from Bardsdey CC turning out for the 2nd XI. Further attempts will be made to find more players in the new year. Currently we have around 33 players, not including any juniors that may come from Bardsey CC but as we all know this doesn't always translate into two teams come the start of the season. A further AGM will be required in the new year to confirm these details and select captains and vice captains.
I've also dropped Yorkshire CC an e-mail about booking some nets as they appear to be closed over the Christmas period. I will try and book the first one for Sunday 16th January from 4pm to 6pm.

Player Recruitment for 2011
The club is now seeking new players for the 2011 season with a view to maintaining two teams in Division 1 and Division 6. If we cannot find enough players for two teams then it is likely one team will fold.
Please contact the club if you are not currently playing for us but would be interested in joining next season.

East Keswick vs. Church Fenton - Match Report
The East Keswick 2nd XI were promoted to Division 5 after a rollercoaster of a day where they lost by 17 runs to Church Fenton but then found themselves promoted as Whixley beat Kippax by 25 runs.
Winning the toss for the 14th time during the season the East Keswick skipper chose to bowl first on a damp wicket. The decision paid dividends almost straight away as Muhammad Kamran (3 for 33) snapped up the wicket of Dean for a duck thanks to a sharp catch at point by Dinesh. At 6 for 1 Ashley Richardson came to the wicket and with Marshall took the score to 23 before Andy Barber (3 for 34) produced a snorter that lifted outside Ashley's off stump and took an edge that was well taken behind the stumps by Gowdhaman. 23 for 2 soon became 29-3 as Karman struck again this time castling Marshall with a ball that nipped back off the seam.
Moorhouse and Rucklidge batted well as they put on 52 before John Barber (3-32) struck twice in the space of an over, first bowling Rucklidge and then having Wilkinson caught for a duck. Neil Chapman took a fantastic low catch three quarters way back to the boundary off James's bowling (1-18) as Fenton reached 125-7. Andy Barber returned to the attack and struck twice thanks to a contender for the catch of the season as Gowdhaman reacted to a fast flying thick edge by reaching up high and to his right and taking a blinder one handed. and then again as he clean bowled Barnaby.
Numbers nine and ten put on two dozen runs before Kamran and Andy mopped up the tail. With a final total of 158 Keswick would have felt it was a very reachable target.
After tea Andrew and Guru went out to bat and made an excellent start with Guru inparticular playing some wonderful shots as they took the score to 31 before Guru fell trying to cut a ball that swung in and took his off-stump. There followed a flurry of wickets as James was clean bowled by a jubliant Richardson for a duck, Gowdhaman and Ashfaq's wild swings found them bowled and caught out, and Kamran too was bowled. Within the space of a few overs Keswick had gone from 31-1 to 42-5 as Fenton sensed victory.
Neil came to the wicket with the Keswick skipper and played well for 8 driving a couple of lovely shots for four before too being bowled as Keswick reached 59-6. The slide was stopped as Gareth helped put on 25 for the next wicket as he smashed 18 including two fours and a six before becoming the sixth East Keswick playted to be bowled out.
As Dinesh joined the skipper at 84-7 Andrew decided that some shots had to be played as he first smashed Rucklidge for a big six to cow corner and then stylishly drove him through the covers for four. Dinesh battled hard as he smashed one ball hard through mid-wicket as he made 12 important runs before falling LBW to Richardson. Having taken the score to 118-8 Keswick were still in the game and Fenton slightly nervous but only two balls from victory. Andy Barber came to the wicket and got off the mark with a lovely on drive through mid-wicket for four and was playing well before failing to get hold of a pull shot through mid-wicket and being caught out for nine. Keswick were now 27 runs short of the total.
A tired Keswick skipper batted on and decided that a couple of boundaries off Davies might be enough to turn the tide. Having missed trying to turn the first ball of the over down legside where there was no fine leg he proceded to try and smash a full toss straight back down the ground, but slicing it slightly he found himself caught on the boundary rope for a stirling 48. Cue a jubilant Fenton and dejected Keswick who were just an agonising 17 runs short of the total required for victory.
Keswick's only hope lay in promotion now lay in Whixley beating Kippax, a result that was something less than likely on the balance of form. A phone call to the match secretary yielded no information so the skipper phoned the Whixley vice captain who teasingly paused before confirming that they had remarkable turned Kippax over. A dejected Keswick team had snatched promotion from the jaws of defeat as the celebrations began and the skipper found himself covered in beer.....
Man of The Match - Whixley CC 2nd XI.
Champagne Moment - Gowdhaman's sublime catch behind the stumps.
A Special Mention - Church Fenton's team who were gracious in victory (and supplied free beer).

The Season Decider....possibly.
Following last week's results in Division 6 (updated tables here) the final week of the season requires the 2nd team to win away at Church Fenton to be sure of promotion. A five or six point win would be enough to finish as runners-up to Yorkshire Post.
Additionally an internal request has been made by the Wetherby League to have an appointed umpire at the Church Fenton vs. East Keswick game, but not at the Whixley vs. Kippax game. As a result of this I have requested that both games have appointed league umpires for the simple reason that Kippax are required to win their game to be promoted, but a Whixley win would see both East Keswick and Church Fenton go up, regardless of the outcome of their game.
An update will be made as and when something is heard.

Division 6 – The Run-In
With just 4 weeks of the season left (3 games for East Keswick) there’s strong competition for the last two promotion places in Division 6 with ourselves, Church Fenton, Whixley and also Kippax still in with a chance of promotion. Here are the remaining fixtures for those involved and as you can see they serve up some big games…..
Saturday 21st August
Kippax Welfare A v Amaranth A
East Keswick A v Yorkshire Post
Whixley A v Church Fenton A
Saturday 28th August

Saturday 11th September
Church Fenton A v East Keswick A
Whixley A v Kippax Welfare A
It’s worth remembering that last years rule that says you can’t play players in the last 3 games of the season who have played more 1st than 2nd team games has been extended this year to cover junior players. I understand Whixley may have had a couple of 1st team players playing against Church Fenton on Saturday and they may well do so again this Saturday in the return match (Church Fenton were apparently under strength last weekend due to their 1st team taking players.)

Promotion from Division 6
I had a quick reply from Kevin Hutchinson who explained that the promotion numbers for Division 6 are correct as per the league table. That's no excuse for not finishing second though....
The promotion picture as portrayed on the website is correct as there is a need to move clubs up to fill the vacancies left by Spofforth, Spofforth A & Little Ribston the picture is clearer if you look through all the divisions rather than just focusing on div 6. As a one team club there is no reason for Wighill Park not dropping (sic) into Div 6 if they fill a relegation slot in Div 5.

Voting on League Structure
The WCL held a meeting last night on whether to change the league structure, the voting was 60%+ in favour of leaving it as it is, at least for the time being. The league tables have been changed to reflect promotion and relegation positions, which have confused me somewhat is it appears to show there are 5 places available in Division 6, when I thought there were only two. I've asked for clarification of this. Here is the WCL update on the voting.
At the SGM held earlier this evening the member clubs voted 25 to 14 in favour of retaining the current divisional structure. As a result promotion and relegation will continue to operate as before.
With this in mind the website league tables will be marked up prior to the next round of matches showing which teams occupy the promotion and relegation places. Clubs should be aware that the number of promotion places available may change dependant on the finishing positions of the sides leaving the League at the end of the season.

Friendly Match - vs. Yorkshire Post
I've had a phone call this evening form the Yorkshire Post captain asking if we would like a friendly game this Saturday, at East Keswick. If you are interested can you text me as soon as possible and let me know....I will get back to you if we can get a team together.
Edit - As I suspected we cannot raise a team so the game will not be taking place.

As posted on the WCL website today. I can't imagine these teams, Church Fenton especially, will be happy with this. Church Fenton have already had 12 points deducted from their 2 games with Wighill Park.
"Following the removal of Wighill Park 'A' from Division Six there would have been an imbalance in the number of matches played by the remaining teams. In order to rectify this position no League points will be awarded for the following games.
Week 17 Little Ribston 'A' v Church Fenton 'A'
Week 20 Bramham & Clifford 'A' v Kippax Welfare 'A'
The four clubs concerned have been notified of this change.

Matt Couchman - knee injury update
Unfortunately Matt is going to miss the rest of the season after learning his knee has been dislocated for the past three months and will require one, possibly two surgeries. He also has some cartlidge floating around in there which will need cleaning out.
Best wishes from everyone in the club Matt and hopefully you’ll be back for the start of next year.

Call for Special General Meeting - WCL
Regarding the proposed re-organisation of the WCL leagues.
The WCL Management BoardNotification is given to all clubs in the Wetherby Cricket League of a Special General Meeting ( Rule 8.7 refers) to be held at the Wetherby Council Chambers on Tuesday 20th July 2010 commencing at 7pm.
The meeting is called to deal the proposal set out below received by the WCL Board on 24th June 2010. Further information may be sent to clubs prior to the meeting.
Call for Special General Meeting
We the undersigned wish to put the following proposal in front of all the clubs in the Wetherby Cricket League:
We propose that the change to the League structure starting in 2011 and set out by the Management Board at the Pre-Season All Clubs Meeting be withdrawn until such time as a full and proper report into the reasons for a change, supported by a set of fact based arguments, has been produced and made available to all clubs in the Wetherby Cricket League, so that the implications of such a change may be appreciated and any change may be supported by a majority of member clubs.

Revised Division 6 Table
The offically revised table taking into account Wighill 'A''s removal from the league can now be seen here.
Wighill Park (Home) - 17th July 2010
Due to the league ruling as per directly below this post, this home game has now been cancelled. It remains to be seen whether the League will attempt to re-jig the fixtures to fill this week in for us, or whether it might be possible to arrange a friendly match of some description. We also have a week off (as per the original fixtures) on the 4th September, again the above applies here also. Any suggestions are welcome...
Wighill Park - In breach of League Rules
What a farce.
Wighill Park 'A' have, despite their best efforts, been unable to fulfill four of their Division Six fixtures this season and are therefore in breach of League rules.
21.9b Any side failing to fulfil a WCL league fixture, for any reason other than weather, on FOUR occasions within the same season shall be expelled from the Division and have their results expunged from the league table.
Confirmation has been received from Wighill Park CC that will not be appealing against the sanctions laid down within the rule. The consequences of this for the remaining clubs in Division Six are as follows..
1. All points gained in matches against Wighill Park 'A' to date will be removed from the League table.
2. All Wighill Park 'A' fixtures will be cancelled.
This will result in teams finishing the season having not all played an equal number of games. A further statement will be issued on this subject shortly
Should any club require further clarification regarding any of the above please do not hesitate to contact me.

6th Division - Half Way
With the second half of the season just about underway here's a look at who might be challenging for promotion. The obvious contenders for Champions are Yorkshire Post CC who are clearly head and shoulders above the rest of the league. The competition for second place however is a real scrap with only 9 points between ourselves in 2nd place and Whixley in 9th. Amaranth and Kippax both have a game in hand over the teams above them and should either of them win that game they would rise up the table to 3rd place, just 2 points behind East Keswick. Here's a breakdown of the most of those team remaining fixtures:
My personal tip (outside East Keswick!) would be Church Fenton as they possibly have the easiest fixtures in the second half of the season and with a seemingly good batting line-up they might prove hard to beat. As with all those things 1st team call-ups and holidays etc. can make a huge difference to the quality of the teams.

Update: Change of League Structure
As you might remember there has been a plan to alter the structure of the league. A number of teams, including East Keswick are against this move and in a recent meeting have signed up to try and force a Special General meeting of the League to discuss the matter. The SGM has been turend down as explain below in a letter by Kevin McCarthy of Wighill Park CC.
Dear All,
I have to inform clubs in the Wetherby League that the League Secretary has informed me that our esteemed Management Board has chosen to reject the Call for an SGM on a technicality.
The Board, in their wisdom, has rejected the call for an SGM on the grounds that some of the signatories are not secretaries of their clubs!
At the time, the meeting of secretaries was called at fairly short notice, in order to ensure that clubs are aware of the impacts on promotion and relegation for this season.
As a result, several clubs in the call for an SGM were represented by recognised senior personnel, such as Club Chairmen, rather than Club Secretaries.
This total lack of common sense and nitpicking by the Board is to be regretted, as it further delays the way that clubs will play their cricket this season and in future.
I have had private discussions with Andrew Clews, at which I informed him of the strength of feeling from member clubs. I would have preferred for the Management Board to have recognised the errors they have made and redress the situation themselves. This opportunity was rejected by the Board.
It seems they continue to treat the views of member clubs with contempt. Such a management style affects all clubs in the League.
As a result, I will try to get in touch with most relevant people etc this week.

2nd Team - Kippax (Away) - NEW START TIME
Please note that the start time of Saturday's game is now 1pm and not 1.30pm as per usual. Please make sure you arrive half an hour before you normally would.
Football World Cup
The WCL have said that teams can start 30 mins early (1pm) on any given Saturday where England are playing a game in the World Cup. This Saturday England are playing and therefore i've been in touch with the 2nd team captain of Kippax to ask whether we can do this. He has agreed in principle but wants to check with his team. I'll post again when I get a definitive answer.
